The McMurdo FastFind 220 Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a compact safety device designed to alert search and rescue services in emergencies, whether on land or at sea. When activated, it transmits a coded distress signal on the 406 MHz frequency, which is monitored by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system, ensuring global coverage. This device utilizes an internal GPS receiver to provide precise location data within 62 meters, allowing rescue teams to locate individuals quickly and efficiently.
The FastFind 220 is equipped with a high-brightness LED SOS light and operates continuously for a minimum of 24 hours, powered by a long-lasting 6-year battery. It features a self-test facility with a battery use indicator, ensuring reliability when needed most. Unlike EPIRBs, which are vessel-specific, this PLB is registered to the user, making it versatile for various activities such as hiking, mountaineering, or boating.
